Searching for ‘dude ranches’ in Australia

I’ve had a request from a Canadian student who is doing a research project on agritourism in Australia and she’d like to find our more info. about ‘dude ranches’ here. I must say I had to ask what that was and it appears it’s a ranch where you can go to ride horses and learn about ranching life. So I guess if any of you have a business like this you might like to put a post here that Courtney can access and have a read about what you are offering.

Thanks Pauline

  1. Hello,

I suppose we are, on a very small scale, the equivalent of a ‘dude ranch’…wonder what the ‘dude’ refers to. When we did the mustering for the neighbouring property of El Questro, with a herd of about 5000 at the time, we had guests join us on the muster. Nowadays, we only have a small herd of cattle ourselves, so our muster takes all of a day or two. We do a lot of work with horses, and much of our business these days is taking people out riding in the bush, from one hour up to 11 days.

The only other ‘dude ranch’ type activity I know of is the big cattle drive they have every year, I think its down in South Australia…but far from authentic. I’m sure it would be good fun though for someone who has never been in the Outback before.

    Regards,

    Alida

    Modern Day Australian Dude Ranch!
    G’day!
My husband and I and our three sons (6,7,10years)live on our 600 acre beef cattle farm situated in the base of the Snowy Mountains Victoria with views looking over Mt Kosciusko – the highest mountain in Australia.
We love the high country tradtions and love to teach this to our children. We have just started horseback adventures and will retrace over Jack Riley’s bridle paths and history. Commonly referred to as The Man from Snowy River! The life on our farm is truly relaxing and the work is very rewardable. The seasons are very extreme which makes it all the more exciting.
